In an attempt to make more organs available for transplant, ministers are proposing a radical change by moving to a system of "presumed consent".

Current rules in England mean those willing to donate their organs, should they die, sign up to a donor register.

A consultation on the new system, which would see opting out of organ donation replacing opting in, starts on Tuesday.

Wales has already adopted an approach of presumed consent. Scotland plans to introduce a similar scheme.

Northern Ireland has also expressed an interest in doing likewise.

Organs should only be used from people who have said they want to be donors.

I registered as an organ donor when i was 16

The problem we currently have is even if you're an organ donor and specified that, if your family turn around and say No! we don't want his organs to be given away, they have to respect family wishes and not take them despite the individual stating he wanted too when alive.

I have always carried a donor card, I cant understand why anyone wouldn't

Been registered as a donor since I got my permit at 15, can't see a reason why not to. I've seen people say that they don't like how invasive it is, but honestly you won't be around to see the scars. I've also worked funerals for tons of donors, and the only one who didn't "look normal" was a guy that donated most of his bones.

I signed up to be an organ donor. But nobody would want my organs anyway. I have a blood condition where any normal persons body would reject my blood entirely. I'm blind af. I smoke. I abused my liver as a teen. My brain isn't the best. 😂

Definitely should be an opt out option.

100% for this, I've always been a donor and am a big believer in using organs for science. But give people the ability to opt out to account for things like religious views.
