Just when you thought 2020 could not get any worse. Now we have giant hornets with freakish eyes and a venomous sting to add to this year's long list of worries.

For the first time, Asian giant hornets have been spotted in the United States, specifically in Washington state, scientists say. Beekeepers have reported piles of dead bees with their heads ripped off, an alarming sight in a country with a rapidly declining bee population.

Redtunnel:
"In fact, the venom that comes with the sting can send a human recipient into anaphylactic shock or organ failure, breaking down flesh and fraying nerve endings. The hornets typically kill about 50 people per year in Japan. In one particularly lethal spate in 2013, 42 Chinese people died and more than 1,600 were injured from the hornets’ stings. Those who survive can have physical effects that last for months, including inflammation of the heart and liver."
