Phishing Awareness - some tips
« on: July 21, 2017, 20:32:41 »
Hey everyone,

In light of recent phishing attempts after the announcement of RuneScape & Old School on mobile, I wanted to post some clear information that will help you spot and avoid phishing emails.

Email personalisation – We will always include personalisation in our emails to you, usually your display name. Phishers are unlikely to have this personalised information in the email.

From name – We use both [email protected] & [email protected] as from name however, this isn’t always reliable as it can be spoofed by phishers relatively easily.

Mailed-by (Gmail) – As you can see here, the mail will always come via bluehornet.com.

Hover over links before clicking them – I know this might seem a little tedious, but if you’re ever in doubt about the legitimacy of one of our emails, hover over the link to check the URL is what you’d expect it to be.

Check for spelling mistakes – Legitimate messages usually do not have major spelling mistakes or poor grammar. Read your emails carefully and report anything that seems suspicious.

We will never ask you to login under a new account name and password – This is a current phishing technique and we will never ask you to do that.

Our emails will never include an attachment – All the information we need to provide you will be in the email itself, never an external file.

Unfortunately, it’s very easy for people to take the images we use in our emails and build something that looks very similar. If you’re ever unsure, please:
  • Provide an example of the email to [email protected] so that we can investigate it.
  • Contact me or Mod Scorpio directly via Twitter, or on Reddit with as much information about the email as possible (when you received it, the subject line, a screenshot of the content etc.).
  • Don’t click anything until we have confirmed this for you.
As a reminder, we strongly advise that you enable authenticator on your RuneScape account and 2-step authentication on your email account, to significantly increase your security. If you have any questions or suggestions, please comment below or message me directly and I’ll be happy to help.

I'd also like to thank everyone that has raised awareness of this so far within the community. This really helps us (me especially) tackle issues like this and it's massively appreciated!

Mod Mikeyy
