Jagex/RuneScape Financial Data
« on: October 01, 2016, 19:38:54 »
Below was taken from Reddit but it can be obtained from the UK Government's company house, where all businesses file their financial data. The information below is specifically on the revenue earned from Jagex.

All values are in pound sterling.

Total employees 2014: 466
Total employees 2015: 338

Subscribers 2014: 1.773m
Subscribers 2015: 1.945m

Profits 2014: 755k
Profits 2015: 20.4m

Subscription revenue 2014: 29.5m
Subscription revenue 2015: 37.6m

Microtransaction revenue 2014: 14.7m
Microtransaction revenue 2015: 19.6m

Developers employed in 2014: 277
Developers employed in 2015: 158

Employees dropped because they scrapped content such as Transformer's Universe. Customer Support staff remained the same.

What's notable from this data?

1. Runescape subscribers increased, rather than decreased
2. Microtransactions account for almost 20million to the company
3. Subscribers are still the best source of revenue for the company, though closely followed by MTX
4. Profits went from less than 1mil to over 20mil in just one year
5. We can see why a Chinese company would want a company that can go from 1mil to 20mil in a year ...

If you ever needed evidence that microtransactions are literally keeping this game alive, it's from these stats. If they cut out the microtransaction revenue, it would be almost entirely their profits.

Hard to believe that they went from ~1M a year to over 20M - That's fascinating to me.

I find it to be a pretty good sign that microtransaction revenue went up about 5mil, but subscription revenue went up even more than that. Also interesting that they have that much less employees. I haven't read anything about other projects they had been doing or cancelling so I just hope they aren't working people like slaves.

It is also just somewhat mind boggling that a browser based point and click thing I joined as a kid just doing f2p is throwing around 10s of millions of dollars.

An almost 10% turnaround in the amount of subscribers is good news, it's showing that more people are actually wanting to pay for the content. That sharp increase in profits is the most standout feature here though.

Is this authentic?  Is there a link to the actual gov page?

Did I give a reason for it not to be? As I mentioned it's on Companies House: https://beta.companieshouse.gov.uk/company/03982706/filing-history

On there they had a filing on 30 September called Group of companies' accounts made up to 31 December 2015

Yeah they don't break that down into specifics. Doesn't a subscription to Runescape cover both OS and RS3? So there isn't a distinction in subscriptions, but there's definitely a difference in where the players are of course.

This is really interesting.  I'm glad that subscriptions are growing and it seems they are doing well.  That's a lot of profit for our little game.  <3
