Jagex posts second consecutive record financial year with revenues up 28% to £74.4 million

Cambridge-based developer Jagex has posted its second consecutive year of record revenues thanks to its continued efforts on its RuneScape franchise.

The company posted revenues of £74.4 million, up 28% year-on-year from its previous record year. It had generated £57.9 million in 2015.

Profits also increased to £28.8 million after tax, an increase of 21.5% year-on-year. Jagex did not break out any other specific numbers regarding its finances.
With all of this money, wouldn't you expect there to be better updates, or at least more resources allocated for projects?

At the rate Jagex are going, I'm predicting that Jagex will not receive their third consecutive record financial year, but I do expect them to make profits.

Many of the updates released this year have been controversial, as they were released unfinished, unbalanced and terrible UI/design. A great example would have to be the Shattered Worlds update, it was released completely unbalanced and you were at one point unable to going beyond certain worlds as it was too hard and very unrewarding. This has now somewhat been fixed, three months after it was released.

Another example of an unbalanced content that was released, would be the luck rework. For over a month or two, nobody was able to obtain the Hazelmere's signet ring. However, this has since been fixed, although insanely rare.

I cannot agree more.

Why is this happening?  Is it pressure from above?

Agreed. This isn't an rs exclusive problem sadly, everything is money focused now.

Xbox/Playstation games are released and then half of the game is locked behind season passes and DLC

Footballers earn more and more each year yet tickets to go to a football game rise each year

Food potions get smaller yet prices go up

House/rent prices are increasing far more than wages ever will

Companies employ at minimum wage or zero hour contracts to save a few quid

So many more examples but sadly just the way of the world now and it will only get worse  :/

It's easy to hate Jagex but I don't see them as much worse than other companies.

Off-topic, but sort of replying to Cherry's response, I think Rockstar did a good job with GTA V and it's online DLC's.

As far as I know, all of the DLC's were free and everything was accessible - The only problem was the cost of the items. You could either spend hours earning the money for a new car or apartment, or buy it via Shark Card.

Would be nice to see other companies take that approach, I think.

I agree, I hope Red Dead 2 follows a similar pattern  \:D/

Back on topic, I didn't mention the quality of the updates either, besides small ninja fixes, almost all the big updates are let downs and fall well short of the hype.
