Farming Guide! by Level 3 Dom
« on: October 05, 2012, 15:24:24 »
Before I start, this guide is made by Level 3 Dom on the Clan Peacefull forums all credits to him!

1. Glossary

Growth stage – Each plant has a certain number of stages that it has to advance before fully growing, these are known as growth stages. These can only take place during a growth cycle.

Growth cycle – This is a five minute period of time that a plant can advance a growth stage. The time that these growth cycles occur at depends on the plant but they always happen at the same times every day starting at 00:00am (midnight GMT).

Farming ticks – These are the times between each growth cycle. The length of the farming tick depends on the plant you are growing.

Efficient skilling – This is when you use the method that makes the most of your money and enjoyment without compromising the time taken.

2. Farming ticks

Please note that all the farming ticks are based on GMT as this is the time that Runescape runs on so please make changes for your time zone accordingly.

It is also important to know that every time you log out or log in there will be a five minute period where nothing can grow. So for example a fruit tree growth cycle happens at 10:40am. This means from 10:40am – 10:45am your fruit trees will advance one growth stage. But if you log out at 10:38am then your fruit trees can’t advance for another five minutes, so nothing will happen until 10:42am. If you then log back in before the end of the five minutes, for example at 10:41am, then nothing can advance for another five minutes meaning 10:46am. This will mean none of your fruit trees will advance for the entire growth cycle so you will have to wait until the next one which is at 13:20 (1:20) pm.

All farming ticks start the day at 00:00am (12:00am) for all plants, so they will happen at the same times every day (with the exception of Spirit trees). This is why it is so easy to know when your plants will advance a growth stage and be ready to be harvested. You should remember that due to server lag, slow internet connections or clocks set at the wrong time that these times are not always 100% accurate and may be a few minutes off.

6. Farming cost

People have been asking for prices so I will add in a link to a spreadsheet that updates with the grand exchange. All credit for this spreadsheet goes to Grimy Bunyip.

One of the best farming guides I have read. I have a question though. Can a patch get diseased even if you have paid the farmer to look  after it, adding another farming tick to the cycle? It has been long since I farmed and when I did, I wasn't aware how the farming ticks worked, but in retrospect, even being unfortunate with the timings of it all, it still seems that patches exceeded the growth time on occasion.

Also, how is it possible that if you plant e.g. herbs in this specific order:
Ardougne patch > Catherby patch  > Falador patch
You can sometimes harvest the Catherby patch and the Falador patch while the Ardougne patch is still growing? This is without having cured any disease.

Glad you guys liked it.

Redtunnel, here's the response from Dom.

Thanks glad you enjoyed it. Yes if a farmer is looking after a patch it can still be diseased making it miss a growth stage.

Well I am not too sure about that but it seems like all the plants grow at different times within the five minute period. So if you logged out or in giving a five minute timer where nothing can advance then maybe the Ardougne patch would fall into that while the others advanced just after the timer ended. But as I said I am not too sure as this has never happened to me and I have grown herbs for years but i'll look into it to get a more accurate answer for you.

I had my question answered in-game, calquat has 8 growth stages at 160 minutes each. Thanks, Runar and Dom :P

I showed this guide to one of my friends who's going for 200m XP, he was very happy to learn how farm runs can be properly timed.

He's a chatmod in Peacefull and don't feel like joining another clan, and he told me to post his guides here if I wanted. It's all for the better, spread his efficient guides to multiple skiller forums so more skillers can take advantage of it.
