Day 4 - Riddle Puzzles

1) In a race, what is the position of a driver after he passes the second placed driver? SECOND

You are in THIRD place if you are trying to pass the second place driver, so you go into SECOND.

2) James is standing behind Lucy and at the same time Lucy is standing behind James. How is this possible?   THEY ARE STANDING BACK TO BACK

3) A rat is at the bottom of a 20 metre deep pit. Every day the rat climbs 5 meters upwards, but at night, it slides 4 metres back down. How many days does it take before the rat reaches the top of the pit?       SIXTEEN   


4) The day after tomorrow is the third day after Wednesday. Which day was the day before yesterday?   TUESDAY

The third day after Wednesday is Saturday. If the day after tomorrow is Saturday, then today is Thursday. Therefore, the solution is: the day before yesterday was Tuesday.

5) In the middle of a round pool lies a water lily. The water lily doubles in size every day. After exactly 14 days, the lily will cover the complete pool. After how many days will the water lily cover half of the pool?   THIRTEEN

Clue was in the riddle, 'doubles in size every day' - after 14 days it will cover completely so the day before would be half cover - 13 days.

Day 5 - Inductive Reasoning

1) D - Colours are alternating black/white, so next must be white. The cross and circle are also moving one point clockwise around the hexagon, so answer must be D.

2) C - Again, top right hexagon is alternating black/white, so next must be black. Next deduction is that the black and white shapes are diagonal to each other, so only option is C.

3) E - So many people overthought on this one! It was nothing to do with the orientation of the circles, but simply the numbers. Alternating numbers of black and white circles - first image is 7 white, 5 black - second image is 5 white, 7 black - third image is back to 7 white, 5 black - and repeat. The only answer is E because it has 7 white and 5 black circles to continue the pattern.

4) D - The black and white sections in each image are exactly half in all areas, therefore the only option is D.

5) C - The black and grey squares are moving one space each time. As they reach the end of the cross, they reappear at the corresponding opposite side. If you follow the sequence, the answer is C.

6) D - The pattern tells us the middle diamond is always white, ruling out B. The middle diamond is alternating dots/non dots so the sequence tells us no dots, ruling out A and E. The squares in the sequence seem to follow a pattern of black, white, grey - the final given symbol is black so you would assume the next must be white, ruling out C. Tough one!
