Below is the music video for the song "This is America" released recently by Childish Gambino (Donald Glover) that is making rounds in the United States for its content.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VYOjWnS4cMY
The video is FULL of symbolism and commentary on a lot of issues the United States is facing, especially within today's political climate.
Some include racism, gun violence, technology, pop culture, mass shootings, police brutality, etc.
It's been featured on numerous major news stations discussing its contents, discussed acrossed YouTube constantly, and went viral on Twitter as people discussed and pointed out different things that they noticed while watching the video.
I was just curious what you all thought of the video and it's messages. Are they accurate? Are the messages conveyed well?
Does there need to be more videos like this? Should music videos make political statements or start political converstaions?
Just want your overall feedback since a lot of issues are discussed in here.
NOTE:
Some symbolism and messages in the video are hard to catch with there being so much going on. It's recommended to watch the video multiple times to catch more things you may have missed the first few times.
If you have any questions about some of the things, I can try and answer or look them up. Or if you want, there's plenty online already about the video as it's being dissected still.

Skimmed the video as the song was crap (imo).
I don't mind if musicians want to make political statements though

Gambino is a genius, the song is brilliant as is the video.
Someone had to do it and he did it well - it gets the point across.

@Rebeca I personally thought so too. I'm not the biggest fan of the song by itself, but I think it's because the song was created FOR the video and not the other way around like most videos are (if that makes sense).
-
i saw the video since the release, and im normally not the biggest fan of rap and stuff. Some songs i like, and for some reason i kinda like this one too..
But, i think the video makes this song.
Since the release i noticed people in the comments talking about ALOT of references
Its really well done in my opinion. :)

Donald is a genius when it comes to alot of things just look at his Atalanta Tv show
-
Song isn't anything special but that video is just pure genius

I honestly think that his previous songs such as 3005 had a much deeper meaning... Idk but I feel like it's all for controversy+fame... am I wrong?
-
But 3005 doesnt necessarily have a .. strong.. meaning to it. Sure its a great song but comparing it to "this is america" which is topical and about gun culture, black life in america, etc, doesnt really sit with me.
Did he do it for fame/controversy? Bit of a pessimistic way to look at it, I imagine its something he felt strongly about and used his voice and fame for good and to spread the word rather than just using it to promote a product on instagram

The song is okay. Definitely not his best, but the video does bring up important points. However, him making the song was not "brave". Almost everyone in the music industry automatically backs things like this.

the song is catchy, and also the video is incredibly smart commentary. he said what he wanted to say and i respect how much he's grown since his youtube era.
