Does age matter in relationships?
« on: July 26, 2016, 19:03:09 »
It is generally socially acceptable for one to be romantically involved with someone whose age is at least half your age plus seven years. Do you agree with this "rule" or is it nonsense?

I think once you're 21+ this rule doesn't really matter.

Personally age doesn't bother me but in the society we all live in these days, no matter what it is, someone is always going to give their opinion, if it be a Negative or Positive response.

It's up to you as a person if you want to let their Negativity affect you!

Generally people judge people with crazy age differences in their relationships because it's unlikely that the two have a lot in common, so it's assumed that one of them is in the relationship for money or some other reason

The age difference in other people's relationship doesn't bother me. I don't think I have any right to care.

.. but for myself, being 20 years old, 30 would be my max. That's a person who is 30 years old... not 30 years older. :P That would be gross...

Being in scotland, ur legal sex limit is 16, so you get some people who will go as low as that. Personally, I won't go near anyone under 18, but preferably 21+, simple due to the legal drinking age being 18, but usually (not always) the 21 year olds are more mature. I'm 24.

As an upper limit, I personally don't go more than 4 or 5 years above me, however my sister once dated a guy who was 32 while she was 19 and my mum is currently engaged to someone 14 years older than her.

As for having nothing in common, that's just simply not true. I could if i wanted to, date someone in their mid-30's and have loads to talk about, music being a perfect example. I still prefer 80s/90s music to most the crap that comes out these days.

All in all, age should only matter to you. People will judge, but that's their issue not yours.

I think the concern with age difference is partially maturity.  There are definitely bigger changes in maturity per year the younger you are.  So when you are younger, the age gap is a bigger deal.  Once you get to an age that you are comfortable with yourself and can make choices without being pressured, it becomes less of an issue.  I have a good friend whose husband is quite a bit older than her.  They had relationship issues because he tended to have strong opinions and she was very insecure.  It took a long while for them to work out a way that she felt like her voice was being heard in the relationship and it was not easy.  They were able to get past that but I think when you have an age gap that is an additional challenge.

All relationships have challenges and require work.  Usually putting in the effort can help with more than just the immediate challenge.  You wind up with a stronger relationship because you have worked out how to work on problems and how to listen to each other.
