euthanasia: your thoughs
« on: April 24, 2014, 00:26:41 »
Euthanasia: the painless killing of a patient suffering from an incurable and painful disease or in an irreversible coma.

Euthanasia is already being carried out in hospitals around the world. Its called "palliative care" where the medical staff give drugs and fluids through a drip but nothing else; but it's when the patient  has only days left to live and has already struggled with the demoralizing and debilitating illness.  It's the doctor, not the patient or the family the makes  that life and death pronouncement. The only decision the patient or the patient's family can consent too is  a "do not resuscitate order".
Animals are euthanized all the time.

Should patients have the right to  decided  for Euthanasia before its too late?

Should euthanasia be used on  humans the same way as they are on animals?

What would you  decide if you had the choice?

I'm for it, especially for people with long suffering illnesses and diseases. Just imagine have locked-in syndrome and only being able to move your eyes. If I had that I would want to be killed instead of pointless suffering.

Id be interested in knowing why youd not take that option Charles.

I believe that every human being has the right to die with dignity, and to leave a person suffering to me is wrong.

If you choose to die when you have a terminal illness then I believe you should be given that with lots of counselling and support of course.

I wouldn't take that option purely because of the fact that I'm a Christian

I prefer a qualitative life over a quantitative life, and euthanasia should be a fundamental right. Not only do temporary treatments cause prolonged suffering, they are also very costly.

If you are against euthanasia, this might change your mind:

Charles: "I wouldn't take that option purely because of the fact that I'm a Christian."

Didn't Jesus choose to  die on the cross so everyone would not suffer? Isnt that a part in Euthanasia? To prevent suffering, not just of the patient, but of the  family and friends.
Watching someone die is heart rendering. What would you do if one of your animals was terminally sick? Let them suffer or have them euthanas?

As with everyone's comments, I'm not judging your opinion. I'm really interested in your thoughts and how you see things. :)

I'd rather not suffer if I knew I was going to die anyway, rather just be put to rest as soon as possible.

Not only is it making it hard on yourself, but it makes it hard on everyone in your life to know you're suffering and there is nothing that can be done to get rid of it other than by euthanasia.

I don't want to get in to a debate here, but I honestly can't see why religion should be involved in it, and I don't see why any religious believers would want you to suffer for the rest of your life when they preach about peace and happiness.

I would only agree if the patient or the family gives consent. As Rob mentioned. If I personally had a sickness where the only way I'd stay alive is to stay in the hospital for the remaining part of my life, I'd rather honestly die than be alive and suffer. But, personally I don't think it'd be fair for the doctor to make that choice, that should be a decision the patient or family members make. Unless if the patient has no family members and the patient has a condition where they can not speak or be able to give consent.

Sean at this stage it is only the doctor that does make the choice on whether a patient lives or dies and thats only  in  the last few days. Its called palliative care.

For Christians suicide is one of the worst sins but you are taking away life that God gave you and you won't be able to repent or ask for forgiveness, another thing is that those who commit suicide are not allowed to be buried in consecrated ground.

I agree we should choose to leave life if we're suffering. No one can choose major decisions for you during your life time , only you. So who are other people to choose if you live or not.

If I'm not wrong, Stephen hawking was in the news recently supporting euthanasia.

:)
