Designer children
« on: May 13, 2012, 19:23:58 »
Do you think we should be able to design our children?

Do you think you should be able to choose how clever and how pretty your child is?

Would you choose a boy or girl?

Only way I could see this in my life is due to the fact I wouldn't want my son/daughter to be bullied, like I was in highschool due to having acne and I hated everyday life... so that is only reason I could see it happening

i dont think we should ever choose that. its not possible to have that amount of control in anything, and becoming accustomed to it, would be morally wrong

i can see why you would want to make the child like, more socially appealing, yes resistance to spots or so. but its a part of life.. and hormones, and that can never change

the only thing i agree with, is testing for the genetic problems etc before birth
though i hate that they are inaccurate, and the choices that can come from them
eg the test on me for spinabifida, came back positive. when i was born, there was no sign of it. my parents had been offered the option to abort me due to the test. they refused, as they loved me no matter what, and would have cared for me

even if the kid was perfect, there will always be a problem/inability to cope etc somewhere, its not just down to the kid, or the genetics of the kid, how things turn out in life.

as such, i would never design my own child, id let fate do it for me.

Unconditional Love.

When I'm in my 30's, infact whenever it happens in my life I would like 2 Children one of each so in the aspect of choosing the gender of your unborn child if I could I would so that I could have the experience of having a daughter and a son.

But whatever happens, happens just role with it. :)

I don't think we should be able to choose. I'm no good with decisions. I'd be far too old to have a child by the time I'd made my mind up!

I wouldn't condemn anyone for doing so if they have reasons behind it. I am also for genetic testing for problems but like Ashy said, they are sometimes inaccurate.

You should love your child unconditionally, whether they are male or female, black or white, brown eyes or blue, blonde hair or brunette, freckles or clear skinned. No matter how your child looks, acts or behaves, whether or not they have disabilities/problems, you should love and accept them for who they are.

You dont love someone because they are perfect, you love them despite the fact that you know there not.

yea I like your comment. But I have to admit it will be a good industry to be in if you are a geneticist or bioinformatic engineer ka-ching! :D

I think it could have some advantages as to genetic disorders but i believe thats as far as it should go. Surely the human race would just become a competitive society to have the most intellectual attractive human, other than being the person you are naturally supposed to be.

isnt it like this anyway?:P
that people will always be and still are judged for on trivial matters as well etc, thats just adding another set of categories

we can change genetics, but overall, the way people are viewed is a much more long term shift if it will ever come, as it involves internalisation of viewpoints, and currently, its blargh....

Bullied for having something everyone get during puberty? That sucks.

I agree with Alex, I would design them to be able to avoid being bullied. But it's either become the bully or the bullied so. :L

I was bullied for having a bright voice and just because I was weaker than others, I never struck back and I don't want that to happen to my kids if I ever get one or more ;c

From a purely scientific perspective, we should be able to. We could completely rid the human race of all bad DNA and genetics in just a few generations. However, from a moral perspective, no we shouldn't be allowed. Although, i would like to add that even though we are choosing the DNA and genetics, it is still 100% our DNA being used, so they are 100% yours, or at least 50/50 with your partner.

I think it would be cool if we could mate with animals and make hybrids.
