American food that is apparently weird?
« on: August 13, 2016, 16:07:16 »
Saw this thread and I'm so confused about how some of these can be found strange. Do other countries really think sliced bread is weird??

Most of these are already present elsewhere in the world and aren't specifically American.

Meatloaf - didn't have this until I came to America. I've made it twice since, very nice meal.
Corndog - I've only had one, I do find it a little strange.
Hershey's Chocolate - to the Brits this is the really horrible chocolate. Compared to Cadbury's this chocolate is like eating shit with sugar on. It's apparently because American's use sugar as a first ingredient whereas Cadbury's uses milk which gives it the creamy 'milk' chocolate.
Jerky - I had it in the UK but it was uncommon. It's an addiction of mine in the US.
Root beer Floats - I've never seen root beer outside of the US and adding ice cream to it does seem a little weird, but interesting. I hate root beer though.
Supermarket bread - it's not that it's sliced, that's everywhere. What I found surprised was the fact it lasts for a month (some nasty stuff in it to make it do that) and has sugar within its ingredients.
Pumpkin Pie - America loves pumpkin, when its in season its in everything. I've yet to try it though.
Biscuits and Gravy - this is a little odd to me. In the UK the closest thing to a biscuit is a scone (They're not the same though) which is a sweet/snack product like a muffin.

A month might be overkill :p But I'm used to bread lasting less than a week in the UK, but in the US they have dates of at least 2 weeks.

I think a lot of these are weird outside the US, because outside the US, people eat real food...not franken-food, loaded with chemicals and preservatives.

We have a fellow homeschooling friend family that did an experiment with the supermarket bread.  They made homemade bread, both white and "wheat" and bought white and wheat supermarket bread.  They left them all out on the counter for a period of time.  The homemade bread molded rather quickly, but the supermarket bread took a long time to get any mold...like a creepy long time.  So. many. chemicals.

Most of those foods look gross and I wouldn't touch the majority of them. Although granted if they were well presented and smelt good, I might change my tune.

I'm American and I find grits and root beer floats weird. But I love pizza rolls (not to be confused with pepperoni rolls).

Pretty sure everyone finds those weird.

I find corn dogs very weird. Along with any number of fried foods at stadiums and especially at state fairs such as fried oreos, fried pecan pie, or fried butter.

Can confirm European chocolate is superior to typical American chocolate. My mom goes traveling to Europe on business once or twice a year and brings back a couple of bars of the chocolate and it's delicious. It's strange too because the bars will be made by Nestle for example, and even though we have Nestle here the chocolate they make doesn't compare.

American sweets / candy has nothing on Europe. We have a serious sweet tooth here in the UK.
