what is your opinion on euthanasia?

first some background to the question .my father is terminally ill with cancer .he's in a hospice with only days left .he's 84 years old and fully aware of whats happening to him .watching him wither away is very distressing ,and i believe that if euthanasia was legal in this country he would have taken that option in order to die with some dignity.
i'm fully aware that some unscrupulous people would try to force this option on elderly/infirm relatives ,but i still feel there is a place for euthanasia in our society ,under strict regulation.what do you think?

I agree entirely with euthanasia, with certain criteria and strict guidelines.
I am sure each one of us, would not wish to suffer or be a huge burden on our families.
We love our pets enough to let them die with dignity, sadly we dont give our relatives the same respect.

Euthanasia and assisted suicide
Euthanasia is the act of deliberately ending a person's life to relieve suffering.
For example, it could be considered euthanasia if a doctor deliberately gave a patient with a terminal illness a drug they do not otherwise need, such as an overdose of sedatives or muscle relaxant, with the sole aim of ending their life.
Assisted suicide is the act of deliberately assisting another person to kill themselves. If a relative of a person with a terminal illness obtained strong sedatives, knowing the person intended to use them to kill themselves, the relative may be considered to be assisting suicide.
The law
Both euthanasia and assisted suicide are illegal under English law.
Assisted suicide
Assisted suicide is illegal under the terms of the Suicide Act (1961) and is punishable by up to 14 years' imprisonment. Trying to kill yourself is not a criminal act.
Euthanasia
Depending on the circumstances, euthanasia is regarded as either manslaughter or murder. The maximum penalty is life imprisonment.
Types of euthanasia
Euthanasia can be classified as:
voluntary euthanasia – where a person makes a conscious decision to die and asks for help to do so
non-voluntary euthanasia – where a person is unable to give their consent (for example, because they're in a coma) and another person takes the decision on their behalf, perhaps because the ill person previously expressed a wish for their life to be ended in such circumstances
End of life care
When you're approaching the last stage of your life, you have a right to high quality, personalised end of life care that helps you live as well as possible until you die.
Kev, can I thank you for sharing your circumstances with us here. You know how many people actually care within our community.
I send you all my love xxx

First of all, I want to say that I'm so sorry you and your loved ones are having to watch this happen - no one should ever have to go through with that. Sending all my love your way
I think euthanasia should be made legal, but like Lilly mentioned with certain criteria and guidelines.
When we all reach near to the end, we should have the right to end it with dignity, not be made to suffer and watch our loved ones see us in this way. If we can put down our pets when they lose all sense of themselves and are clearly suffering, then why can't we have the same option?
I know if I had a terminally ill loved one, I would want to remember them as they were, not have to watch them wither away into someone I don't recognize. It would be the same if I was terminally ill, and being fully aware of everything, I know I would just want the pain to stop, and I would hate for people to see me in that state.
I do hope in the future it will be made legal.

I live in Canada where "medical assistance in dying" is legal. I believe there is a place for it. It needs to be well regulated and only at the request of the person who will be assisted. There was a small amount of objection to it when it was introduced but that seems to have stopped now.
I think all humans (when presented with a terminal illness that will get progressively worse and potentially other scenarios) should have the choice to stop their pain when they feel they want to stop it. If for moral, religious, cultural, or other reasons they decide they do not want to do it that is perfectly fine.
It is their life; they should have the ultimate say in it.
Our thoughts are with you Kev during what must be the most difficult of times for you.
