And now the Lizards are attacking charity websites?

They took down the FBI's website yesterday, if that isn't worrying I don't know what is.

If their sole reason is to show how weak Jagex's defences are against attacks haven't they proved their point? :| Why can't they just move on

Taking down a website isn't that hard. Anyone can take down a website as long as you have enough servers to attack with. And it's not like FBI's website is more protected than others. It's a simple website, it doesn't contain any secret documents etc....

As far as I'm aware any of the decent tricks and methods for inflating traffic easily like syn spamming are pretty easily avoided. With a proper setup and design it's just dealing with the very straightforward bandwidth overloading. It shouldn't on good infrastructure be possible to overload the servers themselves, easily or at all, just the connection

There have been things such as syn spamming that allow them to easily magnify the traffic with lower volumes of bots, meaning that a tiny system could potentially overload something on a much bigger pipe, but most of that is ironed out as it's just flaws in the underlying design and the way firewalls handle things

Each system connected to the internet has a certain amount of bandwith available on the connection, which in the case of servers is limited simply by the size of the cable pipe (a physical limit imposed by the cable). Therefore if externally you send more data down that cable than it can transfer per second, you run into connectivity issues or major lag. Initially just lag and high latency.

But if it gets too much, packets start getting dropped and lost and so botnets work by using their combined network bandwidth to overload a server's bandwidth. But that alone is pretty ineffecient, so things were found that caused more traffic than was actually sent.

In very basic senses, it would be like sending the server a packet that causes it to send 5 back, meaning you're actually getting 5x the data across the table for the 1 you sent, more easily overwhelming the connection. That's a very simple example though and more creative ways have been found :P

There is the other approach of trying to overload the CPU of the server itself, which is possible but can be adverted by building the hardware and software right

They should be used to these sort of things by now and have taken the necessary precautions.. looks like the infrastructure needs a rebuild lol

and that's across the board not just jagex

The typical solution currently is with the help of large clouds that act as a proxy, so the users don't have the real IP, and while your connection may only have 100 mbits, the cloud companies can be plugged directly into the exchange with terrabits of bandwidth available. They act as a soak buffer for traffic and inspect it before sending it onwards to the actual server, which is for example what CloudFlare does for websites

It's a serious crime in e.g. the US and UK (up to 15 and 10 years jail time respectively I believe). I doubt they would be dumb enough to reveal personal info on public channels :P
